Report on the Special Symposiums held by the Center for Asia-Pacific Future Studies

This Center was founded on March 1, 2014 as an interdisciplinary social science research organization that would develop a global outlook on the basis of the “strategy prioritizing Asia” fostered at this university, open “new academic vistas founded upon a common Asian Pacific heritage” and provide a new social agenda, conducting its research with these aims in mind.

This symposium was held in conjunction with the Eurasia Unit for Border Research (Japan) of the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center at Hokkaido University, in order to develop a new perspective within the currently vibrant field of border studies.

The day began with introductory remarks from the Center’s director, Takatoshi MATSUBARA, and was followed with keynote speeches from Professor Akihiro IWASHITA of Hokkaido University and Professor Jussi Laine (University of Eastern Finland), current Executive Secretary and Treasurer of the Association for Borderlands Studies and world-expert on border research. The over 100 participants from at least a dozen countries included a number of border studies specialists and ensured a lively debate.
